Custom Home Builders

A custom home builder is one that builds a unique home for a specific client on a particular home site. Most often a custom home builder will build a home on land that you own rather than offering you a choice of lots in a planned community like a volume builder. If you already own a home site you’ll probably be looking for the services of a custom home builder.

Due to the nature of one of a kind homes that this builder produces they typically will build a small number of homes per year, often less than 12. Typically you would have your own home site and your own floor plans drawn up by an architect or home designer. With a custom home there is usually constant communication between home owner, architect and builder regarding onsite changes as the home building process progresses.

Building a true custom allows you to select or dictate any or all aspects of the home from the foundation to the roof, down to the location of the outlets on a wall and the height of towel bars, custom sweeping walnut staircases, decks, porches, pools, cabanas, elevators, entertainment kitchens, home theaters, large home offices, libraries, hobby rooms…anything you can imagine.

This style can be far more involved on a daily or phase by phase basis than with a volume or track builder. A good architect and a quality customer home builder can build you pretty much any home you can image large or small.

Possible Pros and Cons of working with a custom home builder…

PROS: Typically a great deal of personal attention and “face time” with the custom builder and/or the lead superintendant. The sky is the limit on the style of home you can build and what you can have put in it.

CONS: The nature of a custom home lends the process to be slower than a track or volume builder. May be more expensive due to specialized skills, experience, subcontractors, etc. Can be a  time intensive process for the home owner due to possible amount of customization choices that need to be made.
