Golf Course Lots - Minor Problems
Living on a golf course can be a dream come true for many. The ability to walk out your door anytime to hit a few balls or take in the whole course is about as close to heaven as some avid golfers get. However, like everything else we’ve discussed so far, there are some draw backs to living on a golf course. I’ve got nothing against living on a golf course but I want you to be aware of the potential headaches.
The Day to Day Issues
Living on a golf course can offer it’s own daily challenges. These may sound so obvious that it could seem foolish I’m even writting them down however some folks simply don’t take these things into account. So here we go; a few simple things to keep in mind when looking to buy land on a golf course…
- Most of the time you’ll have people playing golf on the golf course. If the view from your bedroom or kitchen window is facing the golf course expect to see people out there playing golf. If you can see them chances are they can see you.
- Not everyone is Tiger Woods. If your house is going to be on the course, or anywhere near it, expect to have golf balls in your yard. Expect to have your home hit with golf balls. Expect to have a broken window or two each season (who pays for a broken window? Ask the POA before you buy). Expect golf balls in the pool. Expect to hear “Fore!” during your afternoon tea party in the back yard. If the above seems like it’d agitate you then consider not buying on a golf course. Also, when those golf balls land in your yard the golfer will probably trapse into your yard to hit the ball back out. This going to bother you?
- Not all golfers are polite gentlemen (or gentlewomen). Depending on how close your home is to the course itself you are probably going to hear not only the sound of golf balls being hit but also the conversations of the golfers and their exclamations of triumph and defeat. Some of these exclamations may not be “G” rated, so to speak. Would this bother you when you’re sitting on your back deck on a Saturday afternoon? Another topic few think of is natures call. On many courses there are facilities spread around the course for the convenience of the golfers. However, when nature calls, nature calls. That big shrub in your backyard may be an emergency men’s room from time to time. Don’t mean to be crass here but it does happen.
- Golf courses are constantly maintained. Keeping a golf course in top condition takes consistent care and maintenance. Be prepared for weed-whackers, blowers, lawnmowers, sand trap rakes, tractors, fertilizer carts, and all manner of landscaping machinery from early morning until late afternoon. In the very early morning or late evening there may be very large scale sprinkler or watering systems being used. All of this produces noise and this noise will be present everyday. Is it going to bother you?
I just want you to be aware of some of these issues because they are a constant presence. Some people simply love the activity of the golfers and the maintenance crews day in and day out. Others, once they move in, realize that it drives them up the wall when the mowers start up at 6am every morning. If you’re not sure which camp you’re in find and talk with other friends or co-workers who live on or near a golf course. What has their experience been like?
