About
NewConstructionAdvice.com is a spot where we’ll be sharing our experiences on the entire process of building a new home…from buying a piece of land to dealing with your general contactor and their staff. Starting in late Decemeber 2008 and beginning with tips on buying land we’ll run through the entire process. Along the way we’ll be answering questions and comments, covering side topics suggested by readers and generally helping you enjoy the process as much as possible!
No matter if you are having a home built for you or are building your own home the process of new home construction can be frustrating and confusing. So many different steps, permits, contractors and rules apply that you can go crazy trying to understand them or keep up. Dealing with the general contractor, the sub-contractors, banks and suppliers and everything else can feel like a full time job.
I’ve spent over 40 years in custom home building. I started out at a very young age working for my father who was in the business. Working my way up from digging ditches and pounding nails to dealing with clients and scouting to buy property took some time, but I learned a great deal. In the mid 60’s I branched out on my own and started my own business.
In the early 70’s I married and my new wife became the full time accountant and businessmanager of the business. For almost four decades we’ve been through the up’s and down’s of running a family custom home building busines. I’m here to answer builder questions and she’s here to answer anything and everything to do with dealing with the office, paperwork, and “inside” look at the builders office and how it works. Most importantly she can teach you how to get through the paperwork and dealing with a general contactor with as little stress as possible. You can see her column right here - Behind the Scenes - working with a General Contractor.
From the very beginning the main focus of the business has been on building a solid, well constructed home that would last. It’s the little things that make the big difference in a well built home. Anyone, really, can put up a house: pour some concrete, put the walls up, run some wires, slap some paint on, make sure the roof won’t blow off. But to build a good home takes time, takes patience and is, ultimately, very rewarding.
Never one to enjoy sitting in an office I’m on the job site everyday. Looking, watching, directing, correcting and ensuring that everything is as it should be. I’ve built the business on word of mouth and giving the customer what they want and what they need. It’s a tough business but a great one and I’ve loved every minute of it.
We’ve set up this website to share our experiences and knowledge on the topic. Everything from buying land to the new construction process through taking care of a brand new home will be covered. Val will cover dealing with general contractors, the office and paperwork. Any comments and questions are
encouraged no matter how big or how small. Please feel free to throw in your two cents or suggest a topic to be covered though the comment form at the bottom of each article or send me an email with your questions.
